What To Do If Your AC is Blowing Hot Air, and Other HVAC Service Tips…

3 Simple Solutions to Try Before Calling for HVAC Repair

Air conditioners, furnaces, and heat pumps have a lot of moving parts, and every brand can break down or wear out even if you’re maintaining them properly.

They also function as a sequenced unit – things have to happen in a certain order. So if one part in the chain breaks down, the whole thing stops working.

But whether your AC is blowing hot air, your heater is blowing cold air, or the thing just isn’t working the way it should, there are a few simple HVAC service tips you should take before calling B&C Comfort.

3 Easy Troubleshooting Steps for Air Conditioners, Heat Pumps, and Furnaces

1) Check the filter.

This is the most common cause of uncooperative HVAC systems.

A clogged filter not only causes the unit to malfunction, but it also reduces your energy efficiency. You might have a super green AC with a 22 SEER rating, but if you don’t regularly clean out the filter, you’ll have wasted a lot of money on what was supposed to be an energy-saving air conditioner. And your house still won’t be cool.

HVAC service tip #2: check the thermostat batteries2) Check the batteries in the thermostat.

It could be that the whole system is working fine, but your control panel is out of juice. If you need help changing out the batteries, give us a call, and we’ll be happy to walk you through it over the phone. We are familiar with all the major air conditioner brands.

If it’s a heat pump, remember that it performs both tasks. It can heat and cool the house. Make sure the thermostat is not set to heat if you want it to cool. If that was the problem, you can lightly hit yourself in the head (but not too hard!), and be thankful your system isn’t broken.

If it’s a furnace or air handler, check the settings as well. For any heating and cooling system, the thermostat settings are an easy thing to overlook.

3) Try turning off the power at the source.

This is like rebooting your computer. You can usually do this on your breaker panel, or in some cases, there is a power switch on the unit itself. Just turn it off. Wait a minute. Then turn it back on. Remember – these things have a sequence. Sometimes things just get out of whack, and a reset can set it straight.

If those simple HVAC service tips don’t solve the problem, your system probably requires professional service.

Some common problems that are too complex to fix on your own:

  • The circuit board is dead. Nothing you can do but replace it
  • Motors have busted, worn down, or overheated. Again, this happens over time. Just need new ones.
  • Pilot light is out and needs a new fuse
  • Any other interruption to the startup sequence will end your attempt to cool your house.

Call B&C and we’ll restore the cool comfort to your home
